SLO7, ARTIFACT 3:
Public Service Announcement video project Link: Public Service Announcement Reflection Paper In the summer of 2017, I produced a public service announcement (PSA) video for Professor Daniel Martin’s media production services class. The video was filmed in Durham and is approximately three minutes long. It features a community member talking about his experiences with the library and the importance of the library as a community institution. To protect the privacy of the person I interviewed for the video, I have chosen not to post the video on this page. I have instead included the assignment reflection paper that explains how I made the video and what I learned from the production process. The reflection paper explains my rationale for creating the video as well as the thought process behind the planning of the video production. During this project, I learned how to produce a video from start to finish. I created my first-ever storyboard, a type of outline in which one plans each video shot by sketching it out in advance. I then found an interviewee, selected a location, shot footage with a camcorder, chose “stock” music clips, and edited the video in Wondershare Filmora. This video production experience was valuable because it demystified video editing software for me and taught me how to take a simple idea (“Go to the library!”) and turn it into a visual story. It also gave me confidence that I could use the video medium to inspire people. The experience will inform my future efforts to create cost-effective marketing tools in the library environment. When working as an outreach specialist, I hope to use a video like the one described to encourage library involvement by people who do not ordinarily engage with the library but who may benefit from its resources. |
