SLO 6, ARTIFACT 3:
Oral history resource site Link: https://sltorian.wixsite.com/durhamoralhistory I created this oral history resource site for Professor Martin’s media services class. The audience is new oral historians who need help understanding the oral history collection process. It is an example of how I might use a website to serve underserved, marginalized, and minority individuals looking to document their own histories. Using the Wix.com platform for this site gave me the chance to use a website-building platform that was unfamiliar to me. While developing the site, I learned the differences between Wix’s and WordPress’s design options. I found that Wix allowed for more design creativity in some respects, but that WordPress was easier for me to use (perhaps because I started using WordPress first). The site combines the resource features of a LibGuide with the teaching aspects of an online course. Teaching through a website was a new experience for me. I kept the design and the content simple but did extensive research to determine what resources would be best suited for a beginning historian. Oral history is a strong interest of many seniors. It also has empowering potential for racial and ethnic minorities often excluded from the historical narrative. I can envision using this site for seniors, racial and ethnic minorities, and marginalized or underserved public library users who want to explore the topic of oral history. |
