SLO 5, ARTIFACT 2:
Practicum Goal Tracking Document This is part of a tracking document I created to guide my practicum activities. It details the work I did and the skills I gained while working toward one of my practicum goals (Develop an understanding of legal copyright issues affecting libraries). I included it as an illustration of how I practiced project management and self-reflection skills in a library setting. The practicum was my first experience working in a digital humanities environment. Digital humanities is an academic field that is still very much in development, and definitions of the term vary. In my work environment, digital humanities involved production of scholarship in an online context with an emphasis on interdisciplinary exchange and open access to information. My responsibility was to co-create a file-naming system with a fellow intern and gather copyright information for image files. In accordance with team practices, I used Google Suite products (i.e. Docs and Sheets) to manage my work – another new experience for me, since I had never used these tools in a work environment before. A third new experience was that of using Dublin Core metadata elements for the file-naming system. My supervisor recommended that I find time each day to think about what I had learned that day. Doing this gave me a sense of accomplishment and prompted me to reflect regularly on my work practices. I plan to continue the practice of goals tracking and daily reflection when I begin working as a library and information professional. As an outreach specialist, I will need to practice strong project management, organizational, and self-reflection skills in order to develop a coherent outreach strategy and assess its effectiveness. The practicum goal-setting experience strengthened my big-picture planning and self-evaluation skills in ways that will prepare me for the project management challenges of outreach work. |
